War ravages England in 1464 during a blood feud between the House of York and the House of Lancaster over who is the country's true king. Young Edward IV, heir to the House of York, is crowned king with help from master manipulator Lord Warwick, known as "The Kingmaker," who has a plan to control the throne. But that plan comes crashing down when Edward falls in love with Lancastrian commoner Elizabeth Woodville. A violent struggle for the crown ensues between Woodville, adversary Margaret Beaufort and Anne Neville, a pawn in her father's power game.

Critics Consensus

Though it sometimes suffers from clunky storytelling, The White Queen still delivers sufficient intrigue, thanks to its gorgeous costumes, splendid cast, and sexy, soapy plots.

The White Queen: Season 1 | Rotten Tomatoes (1) Mary McNamara Los Angeles Times Years slip by in a moment, dismissed with clunky exposition, the rooms with their hangings become interchangeable and claustrophobic, and though some windows shine brightly, it becomes increasingly difficult to see the kingdom for the queens. Jan 6, 2014 Full Review The White Queen: Season 1 | Rotten Tomatoes (2) David Wiegand San Francisco Chronicle [Max] Irons, ... along with the rest of the cast, makes The White Queen an entertaining romp through a complicated and fascinating period of English history. Rated: 3/4 Aug 14, 2013 Full Review The White Queen: Season 1 | Rotten Tomatoes (3) Genevieve Valentine AV Club The miniseries presents a sprawling 10-hour epic that, if nothing else, commits fully to its scope, employing half the working actors in the UK and surrounding countries in service of its storytelling. Rated: B- Aug 12, 2013 Full Review The White Queen: Season 1 | Rotten Tomatoes (4) A.A. Gill Sunday Times (UK) It's pretty and toothless, far lighter than its source material, and nothing like as thrilling as it should, or could, be. Oct 10, 2018 Full Review The White Queen: Season 1 | Rotten Tomatoes (5) Christopher Stevens Daily Mail (UK) As a love story set in an impossibly chivalrous past, this was deliciously enjoyable. The conflict between the houses of Lancaster and York ceased to matter -- the crucial conflict was between Innocence and Experience. Nov 7, 2017 Full Review The White Queen: Season 1 | Rotten Tomatoes (6) James Plath Movie Metropolis If you can brush aside concerns about historical accuracy (including a 15th century that seems a lot cleaner than you'd expect), 'The White Queen' is a rewarding experience. Dan S Awesome series! As a historian I do not always agree with everything but you can look it up and research the history and come up with your own conclusions. I loved this series but sadly I did not like the White Princess. After too. First series was amazing! Rated 5/5 Stars • Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/06/23 Full Review Steve C It looks lush, but the attempt to rewrite history from a female perspective plays havoc with reality. Every scene begins with the delivery of a message and an information-dump to remind us who people are; is interpolated with witchcraft, religious hysteria, softcore porn and gory childbirth; and ends with someone called back on the point of departure to be insulted. The language switches between mock-Elizabethan-speak and 21st century slang. Characters are oblivious to motivation they voiced in an earlier scene and impossible pairings are engineered merely to create dialogue. A too-broad canvas means a rickety chronology of actual events is maintained by stuffing any gaps with invention. The budget must have evaporated towards the end with too many scenes filmed in an alley behind Westminster. Stops-out tearjerk action often replaces subtlety and underplaying as if self-control was unknown in the 15th century. Less than memorable and didn't make me want to read the books. Rated 2.5/5 Stars • Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/15/23 Full Review Audience Member The actors (particularly Max Irons and Rebecca Ferguson) make the series worth watching. Their chemistry alone makes it a 5 star watch. The script, however, is full of endless, near sociopathic, jockeying for power and a heavy dose of witchcraft, which both become tedious after the second episode. Watch it for the romance (eps 1-5) and a cursory glance at medieval England under the reign of Edward IV, not the lackluster scripts that stretch "historical fiction" to down right whole cloth invention.
